A LOT of questions about this, seeing as Sasuke’s been involuntarily speaking it in recent chapters.
I did a lot of research on ancient Egyptian–okay at least, I researched as much as I could understand in the hopes of remaining accurate–and the language is very, very tricky.
See, we don’t actually know how Ancient Egyptian sounds. It’s all a guessing game. So if you look at movies like ‘The Mummy,’ you’ll find a lot of their words are made up or exaggerated, but the pronunciation is guttural and a little harsh to the ears, which is what many think the language used to sound like when it was spoken.
From my understanding we can only guess, since their are no recorded vowels, so some think the sound is similar to Arabic or modern day Coptic (which is apparently the final form of Egyptian), but again, the actual sound is all speculation. As for how it’s written they didn’t have a separate alphabet like A, B, C’s. They relied on hieroglyphs, which were more logo-graphical. So instead of an image representing a sound, like an “eye” meaning “I” to us, because it sounds like it, it represented a whole word. That makes things even more tricky, and deciphering how such was translated into written syllables is again, really, really hard.
It’s definitely not something I could fully wrap my head around for the purpose of this fic, but I sure did try.
